Packaged dry, hydraulic cement grouts are widely used in bridge industry. They are usually composed of hydraulic cement, fine aggregate, and other ingredients. Most of commercial grouts require only the addition of mixing water for use. The manufacturer may recommend job site addition of specific amounts and types of additional aggregates to his product for some uses. This document focuses on the grouts potentially used to connect prefabricated elements.
Prefabricated elements can be connected through several types of connections (i.e. bar couplers, grouted ducts, member socket connections, etc.). To complete these connections, grout is always used to embed reinforcements or fill gaps. These tasks require grout to have following features:
The fluid consistency and extended working time provide the possibility to flow easily into tight areas (i.e. grouted splice sleeves, grouted ducts, gaps between components, etc.) and large placements. High early strength allow the connections gain strength quickly, such that the project can be completed in a short period. High strength of the grout ensure the strength of the finished connection. For the long term performance, non-shrink grout tend to reduce the crack that is occurred on the interface between grout and prefabricated elements and grout itself, which improve the durability of connection.
